🇳🇴 Arriving in Oslo, Norway: What to Expect + How to Get Into the City
Arriving in Oslo is surprisingly easy—and honestly, a great first impression of Norway. Arriving in Oslo is easy. It’s also a great first impression of Norway.
The main airport, Oslo Airport (Gardermoen), is clean, modern, and efficient. Even though I didn’t explore much of it, everything felt simple and well organized.
Landing at Oslo airport is quite easy. Getting from Oslo airport to city center is a breeze. Read more about the different options you have to reach the city quickly once you arrive.
✈️ What Oslo Airport Is Like
Oslo Airport (also called Gardermoen) is Norway’s main international gateway, located about 30 miles north of the city.
While I didn’t explore all the shops and restaurants, a few things stood out right away:
- Super clean and minimal design
- Clear signage (very easy to follow)
- Efficient baggage claim and exit process
- Direct access to trains right inside the airport

One of the best parts? You don’t need to figure out complicated transfers—the transportation options are right there when you arrive.
🚄 Option 1: Airport Express Train (Fastest)
The Flytoget Airport Express Train is the fastest way to get into Oslo.
- ⏱ Travel time: ~20 minutes
- 💺 Very comfortable and modern
- 💸 More expensive than other options
This is the best choice if you want the quickest and easiest ride into the city.
👉 You can check schedules and tickets here: flytoget.no/en/
🚆 Option 2: Vy Train (Best Value – What I Took)
The Vy Train is the regular regional train—and honestly, it’s what I would recommend for most travelers.
Traveling from Oslo airport to city center was super easy. You can purchase tickets at a kiosk near the entrance to the train and be on your way quickly.
- ⏱ Travel time: ~23–25 minutes
- 💸 Much cheaper than the express train
- 🚉 Drops you at Oslo Central Station (Oslo S)
The trains run frequently, and you can buy tickets at the airport or online.

If you’re trying to save money without sacrificing convenience, this is the best option.
🚕 Option 3: Taxi or Rideshare
Taxis are available right outside the airport, but they are expensive compared to the train.
- 💸 Most expensive option
- 🚗 Convenient if you have lots of luggage or are traveling with a group
🚌 Option 4: Airport Bus
There are also airport buses that connect to different parts of Oslo.
- ⏱ Slower than the train
- 💸 Mid-range pricing
This can be a good choice depending on where you’re staying.
📍 Final Thoughts
Arriving in Oslo is one of the easiest European airport experiences you’ll have. Between the clean layout, clear signage, and super simple train access, it’s a stress-free start to your trip.
If you’re deciding between transportation options, I’d recommend the Vy train. I think its the best balance of price and convenience. It gets you into the city just a few minutes slower than the express train. This is the train we took and it was effortless to buy tickets and get into the city.
