Sleeping Under the Stars in Lapland: Our Glass Igloo Stays in Levi & Rovaniemi

•

One of the biggest highlights of our trip to Finnish Lapland was staying in two very different glass igloos — one near Levi and one near Rovaniemi. Both offered the unforgettable experience of sleeping under the Arctic sky, but each had a completely different feel.

We stayed at Aurora Pyramid Glass Igloos near Levi and Halo Igloos near Rovaniemi. Here’s what each one was like and how they compared.

Aurora Pyramid Glass Igloos (Near Levi)

The Aurora Pyramid Glass Igloos are located in the Tonttula Experience Village, about a 10-minute drive from Levi. Kittilä Airport is about 21 km away, making this a convenient base for skiing and winter activities.

The pyramid-shaped igloos were cozy and modern inside, with beautiful finishes and a warm, comfortable atmosphere. One of the coolest features was the heated glass roof, designed so snow slides off the windows — perfect for aurora watching (although we didn’t see the Northern Lights due to conditions).

There’s a digital wall control panel that lets you:

  • Turn the glass heating on and off
  • Control the lights
  • See the current chances of seeing the aurora

Inside Our Igloo

Our igloo had:

  • A private bathroom with toilet, sink, and shower
  • A small kitchenette with fridge, sink, dishes, glasses, and a Nespresso machine
  • A dining bar with stools
  • A nice entry area with coat racks and luggage storage

The room felt warm and well-designed for winter travel. The only thing I personally didn’t love was the shower layout — there wasn’t a barrier around the shower floor, so water spread toward the sink and toilet. This seems to be a modern bathroom style, but it just wasn’t my preference.

Dining & Activities

There’s a restaurant on site where dinner and breakfast are included. We didn’t try breakfast, but we did have dinner and it was very good.

The surrounding Tonttula Experience Village has several themed areas, including:

  • Elves’ Hideaway
  • Gingerbread House (cookie-making experience)
  • Santa’s House
  • Other lodging options like Elves Village Hotel, Elves Cabins, and Country House

The other accommodations felt much more traditional in décor — a bit old-fashioned — so the glass pyramids were definitely the most modern and appealing option.

Overall, this stay felt:
Cozy • Fun • Convenient for Levi • Best choice on the property

Halo Igloos (Near Rovaniemi)

Halo Igloos felt like an entirely different level of luxury. They had only opened about two weeks before we arrived, so everything was brand new and beautifully finished. The resort is located about 18 minutes north of Rovaniemi Airport and just 12 minutes from Santa Claus Village, tucked into a quiet forest setting that feels peaceful and secluded.

The igloos have tall glass windows on two sides and glass above the bed, giving you beautiful views of the snowy forest. One of my favorite features was that you can see the private outdoor hot tub directly from the bed through the glass window. You can even change the color of the hot tub lighting, which makes it especially magical at night.

Sitting in the hot tub surrounded by snow-covered trees in the forest was one of the most memorable moments of the entire trip. It felt peaceful, cozy, and completely private — like being in your own little winter world.

Inside Our Igloo

Our Halo igloo included:

  • A kitchenette with fridge, dishes, coffee and tea, toaster, microwave
  • A countertop with two bar stools
  • A beautiful bathroom with walk-in shower, sink, shelves, and bathrobes
  • A private sauna inside the bathroom
  • A private outdoor hot tub

The bed was extremely comfortable, and the overall design felt modern, warm, and high-end.

Dining & Resort Features

There is a large restaurant on site where breakfast and dinner are included. We had dinner and really enjoyed it.

Included with the stay:

  • Snowshoes for exploring nearby forest trails
  • Reindeer enclosure to visit anytime
  • Cozy resort lounge and outdoor fire pit
  • Aurora alerts so you don’t miss Northern Lights opportunities
  • Free daily shuttle service to Rovaniemi via Santa Claus Village

The resort has 26 glass igloos in total, and everything is designed to focus on privacy, quiet, and meaningful moments in nature.

Overall, this stay felt:
Luxury • Romantic • Peaceful • Perfect for a special occasion

Which Glass Igloo Was Better?

Honestly, they were both amazing — just different.

Aurora Pyramid Igloos (Levi):

  • More activity-focused
  • Close to skiing
  • Fun themed village atmosphere
  • Best for: families or travelers combining skiing and igloo stays

Halo Igloos (Rovaniemi):

  • Much more luxurious
  • Private sauna and hot tub
  • Quiet forest setting
  • Best for: couples, honeymoon-style trips, or relaxation

If I had to choose just one for comfort and luxury, Halo Igloos would win. But if you want to pair your stay with skiing and village activities, the Aurora Pyramid Igloos are a fantastic choice.

Is Staying in a Glass Igloo Worth It?

Staying in a glass igloo in Lapland is absolutely worth it for the experience alone. Falling asleep while looking up at the Arctic sky and waking up surrounded by snow-covered trees is something you don’t forget.

Whether you choose Levi or Rovaniemi, glass igloos offer a magical way to experience winter in Finnish Lapland — especially if you’re hoping to see the Northern Lights.

“Things to Do in Rovaniemi”

There are many fun things to do in Rovaniemi, but one of the most popular winter experiences is a combined reindeer and husky safari. You can visit a reindeer farm, ride in a reindeer sleigh through the snowy forest, and enjoy an exciting husky sled ride — all in one unforgettable adventure.
